Good news for AI? Humans aren’t binary

The Binary Night

I’m excited about AI. I really am. But mostly because it reminds me how lucky we are to be human. See, AI is stuck in a world of 1’s and 0’s. On/Off. Yes/No. Like a light switch or a teenager refusing to clean their room.

AI creativityWe, on the other hand, live in the deliciously awkward gray. Not black or white, not on or off – more like a dimmer switch installed by a drunk electrician. Contradictions are our native language. Nuance is our guilty pleasure. Ambiguity? That’s where the exceptional human stuff hides.

Paradox pays

Writers, marketers, and creators know this. Rules are fine, but paradoxes pay the bills. A campaign that both inspires and annoys? Viral. A headline that promises clarity but delivers chaos? Clicks galore.

And humor? That’s our nuclear option. Sure, AI can spit out a knock-knock joke, but it doesn’t know the soul-shaking hilarity of laughing so hard you shoot coffee through your nose during a Zoom call. Humor is empathy, timing, absurdity, and a dash of “should I really be laughing at this?” That edge – the human edge – keeps audiences leaning in.

Then there’s context. AI doesn’t write copy while stewing over last night’s bad date or humming “Baby Got Back” on loop. But we do. That mess is our magic. Mood swings, caffeine jitters, questionable playlists – they all get baked into the story.

So yes, AI will keep getting sharper, faster, and creepily eager to please. But we’ll still own the gray. We’ll still mine the contradictions. We’ll still laugh until it hurts. And because humans aren’t binary, the singularity is probably delayed indefinitely – stuck somewhere between maybe, sorta, and “Ask me after coffee.”
